It's too wide off the target and is old-fashioned. Even a Japanese would think that way, so how much more would a French person would? And there are tons of self-proclaimed directors like that over there. I'm happy that Tokyo Monogatari made it into the list. I don't like the French, but they're about the only ones who can understand the greatness of Yasujiro Ozu.

Yeah, I guess Audition does seem like a French horror movie. Like how they depicted pain.
I thought that Audition would be a grotesque film, but got so disappointed when I watched it. Well, I guess that's as far as movies based on Japanese standards can go.
Well, I guess we can indeed be proud of 7 Samurai and Godzilla before the rest of the world!

Whatever country you're from, I think there aren't that many chances to watch other international movies outside of your usual Hollywood flicks. And when you look at >>1, a lot of these have won awards at international film fests so I don't think you can help it even if the titles seem too biased.

Japanese subtitles are available on the DVD. I was able to watch the revival screening of 7 Samurai in a theater, and it's true that the audio was so bad, and you couldn't make out what they were saying until you get used to it.

That one is precisely a movie aimed for the Japanese. If you bring it overseas, I get the feeling that it will just be treated on the same level as To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. But the actors in that movie are amazingly good.

Every single one of those are good movies. I think movies with social awareness themes won't appeal too much abroad. Like Itami's movies, it seems that Tanpopo's regarded higher overseas than Martha.

The reaction to the movie is quite different between the people who saw it after reading the original, and those who only saw the movie. The former saw the movie as trash while the latter have gone on to praise the setting and the general theme of the movie, more than whether it was actually good or not.

This may be old but I recommend LE BAL. This is also true with the more recent ones like Amelie and Nikita, but I feel this sort of sense that they have that can never be copied by Hollywood -- be it a good thing or a bad thing.

Looks like he's got the popular genres down by choosing a Kurosawa film, a Japanese horror, a Japanese kaiju movie, and a Kitano movie. I personally wanted him to include Ghibli to represent Japanese Anime and a Mitani movie to represent Japanese comedy.
